Well, it looks like I would have gone another whole year again if it hadn't been for the strangeness last January. I wonder whatever happened with that? Strange situation.
But today was the day, and it seems that that event is the only thing that can get me to post an update in this old journal.
October 2, 2008
I walked outside this morning and everything was exactly how it is sometimes; crisp and bright, a slight chill, completely unexpected. I looked up and there sat a small hawk, very high up in an old oak tree. He was looking right at me.
That's when it hit.
Earlier this year than it has been for a very long time. I'm afraid Kari may be right.

Too perfect
For the obvious (and less so) reasons, this really, really cracks me up.

I can only hope that there's an Air inside the next one she brings. ;-)
Priceless.

May have solved the oil crisis
You forget how handy it is to have a little place like this to note the bizarre stuff that you feel you should note, but that you know no one really cares to hear.
My favourite little cafe has been out of their usual paper cups the past several days. They have replaced them with cups made of some variant of Styrofoam that has, until now, never been seen outside the confines of Area 51 (or possibly Greenbriar). Old man Dart would be rolling over in his Brazilian grave. (BTW, we all STILL know that the brother did it.)
The horrid thing is that when reheated in the microwave (as I do) these alien coffee cups start to off-gas what for the life of me smells exactly like high-octane gasoline. I started looking around frantically for open flames, 'cause I just knew the whole place was gonna blow.
Needless to say, that put me right off the java, but I have a feeling that any future road trips will be a lot more economical.

Dead or Alive
Dead or Alive had it right; been a long time.
And it has been a long time since something new came along. Maybe as long ago as when I first ran into stock photography. I'm not sure it's supposed to work this way, but it seems that as I get older it gets harder to find new stuff that is truly interesting. The old stuff has stayed fun - don't get me wrong - but I like to have a glimpse of the 'next' thing. Or maybe the 'other' thing would be a better way to put that.
All things considered, I suppose this new thing is not so different from the first thing. Same store, different department (or some better metaphor). Been trading notes with several folks who are involved in something that has the appearance of strangeness. Funny thing is that I 'met' a couple of them before, when I was working on the OVERWATCH project with Djinn. Very bright people, ARG folks; but it looks like they have gotten involved in something in the real world (or at least the part of it where things get a little blurry). They were helping with that Whitechapel project that I've been running errands for, but I get the impression that a part of that spilled over into something else. Funny how that always happens.
Apparently someone got video of what looks like an incapacitated someone getting thrown into an SUV and driven away. Saw that and was struck by the strangest sense of deja vu. ;-) It looked like normal backup to me, but the situation was strange. Hoodoo stuff. The guy keeled over for no apparent reason other than acting like a fool in the middle of some residential street. I'd be very surprised if it isn't all the usual gothic fun - but still, you can't let the little pricks generation gap ya.
I'm half hoping a physical lead turns up. Maybe I'll have a chance to finally wear that trench coat.

The beauty of the thing
Sometimes the beauty of the thing is only apparent in the word that isn't written. Or the line that isn't drawn.
Or the achingly adolescent thought that isn't thunk.
Oh brother.

Oh brother.

Home Sweet Home
In a strange way I am pleased to see that I was able to go an entire year without posting anything here other than the important fact of being overcome by the once-yearly fit. I hope that means I have been busy having a life.
November 13, 2007
This year, for the first time in nearly a score of years, I was in the Forest when it hit. Had to help our mutual friend with some training, and that training, for various reasons that I still don't fully comprehend, had to take place in the middle of the woods far to the North of anywhere else in the world. It was very late this year, but it had been extremely warm here at home and I was in balmy India for quite some time prior to heading to the Forest. The concept of Autumn seems completely alien in India.
Was off by myself at the time (seems like this is always the case, come to think of it), so was spared that indignity.
It was beautiful there. I love it at that time of the year. The training went well. No one got hurt. Too badly.
